Playa del Ingles is Gran Canarias’s largest holiday resort. It’s the ideal place if you’re looking for a bit of fun in the sun and is well-renowned for its all-year-round climate. It is also known for being a popular choice for 18-30 holidays and is the perfect destination for those looking to travel with groups of friends for its beautiful beaches and top nightlife. Dotted around Playa del Ingles there are several commercial centres, all of which house shops, supermarkets, banks, bars, arcades, restaurants and clubs.
Many of the holiday reps on the island will tell you that this is the place to go out, the very heart of the great nightlife that Playa del Ingles has to offer. With a host of late night bars to suit all taste, great drinks offers and infamous clubs such as Cream and Pacha, it is no surprise that it draws young people from all over Europe to it during peak season. Be warned though, it is not the place if you just want to have a quiet drink.
Top club: Costa Chinawhite is probably the most popular club at the centre. The interior, and most of the furnishings, is white, hence the name, and is the place to go if you want to dance to the latest in commercial music, Hip Hop and R&B.
Top tip: A lot of the bars put on two for one offers on drinks, so keep your eyes peeled for those.
It is no secret that the Yumbo Centre is the gay and lesbian hub of Gran Canaria. Recognised worldwide for putting on amongst the biggest Pride celebrations in Europe, Playa del Ingles has long attracted members of the LGBT community, with many of them preferring to head to the Yumbo when it comes to nightlife. Many of the bars and clubs are managed by gay people, but most are welcoming of people of all sexual persuasions. You’ll find an array of hilarious drag shows, a fantastic array of cocktails and a young, fun crowd.
Top bar: Sparkles Showbar is one of the most popular bars in the Centre and is always packed full of people enjoying the witty drag shows and very reasonably priced cocktails. Definitely worth checking out, but be warned, if you are not up for audience participation then sit at the back. Entry is also free.
Top tip: Get to the drag and theatre bars early as they become very busy from around 9pm onwards.
Where To Stay in Playa del Ingles
There are plenty of hotels to suit all budgets in and around Playa de Ingles and nearby Maspalomas.
Hotel Barcelo is a fantastic hotel only a short walk away from the Yumbo Centre. With two pools, several restaurants and great service, this really is a gem of a hotel.
If you’re looking to be right in the thick of it, the Club Hotel Riu Waikiki is situated a stone’s throw from the Kasbah Centre and has very reasonably priced rooms, but do not expect it to be quiet.
